Notes from the Importer: This year both Ty and Brock did their own individual cuvees, this is Ty’s. Bagno di Sole (translates to sun bath) is inspired by Ty’s love for Southern Rhone expressions of Grenache. His first WTF moment with natural wine occured while drinking an Anders Frederik Steen cuvee. It was a blend of direct pressed Grenache Noir, with the fully macerated juice of the same grape.
He elected to follow the same process here. The day we brought in the Grenache, there was already Chardonnay in the press. Instead of cleaning it out, we just put the Grenache in and pressed it on top of the Chardonnay skins. That direct press juice went directly into barrel where it fermented. The rest of the Grenache went straight into a stainless steel open-top where it fermented up until 3 Brix, and then was pressed into neutral French oak barrels where it resumed and finished fermentation.
When we went to blend the barrels together, no mixture of the two made sense together, so the direct press juice became its own wine (see below).
This wine is a super delicate and intricate expression of Grenache Noir. It reminds us of macerated cherries dusted with apricot zest. Meant to be enjoyed bathing out in the sun :)
