Dominic Gober and Gerald Freinbicher (Gober & Freinbichler) hold *choice* parcels in Neckenmarkt, in southern Burgenland (near Moric), and produce what is, in our opinion, one of the most transparent and elegant Blaufrankisch for the money. For 2023, they have pushed further into this “elegant” mantra for an energetic red that almost floats across the palate at only 11.5% alcohol. The Zweigelt (the dominant grape) gives the wine force and dark fruit, the Merlot and Blaufrankisch, a bit of mid-palate weight and herbal complexity. But in the end, this is just a graceful, buoyant light red to chill with… also, it can and maybe should be served chilled.

This is really, really well-priced and in good quantity (for the moment) but it’s a serious wine and well made; Gober & Freinbichler are getting certified organic and this is all natural ferment.
