Region: Venezia Giulia, Italy
"Azienda Zidarich was founded in 1988. The winery is located in a beautiful and unique corner of Italy's Friuli region, known as the Karst (Carso in Italian). Benjamin Zidarich revolutionised his father's company by expanding the vineyards and focusing on native grape varieties. Over the years, Benjamin has planted new vines and expanded the vineyards from ½ hectare up to 8, whilst the production has reached 20,000 bottles per year.
The area is often affected by the Bora, a cold and violent local wind that can exceed 120 km/h. On the plateau, the climate is fairly continental and benefits from the mild weather that blows up from the Mediterranean Sea.
The grapes for this wine are harvested manually and are de-stemmed before undergoing both fermentation and maceration in open vats for two weeks. Only natural yeasts are used during fermentation. The wine is then transferred to medium and large sized barrels that are between 10 - 15 years of age where a malolactic fermentation is allowed to occur.
This wine has enticing notes of crunchy mango, white pepper, and lemon verbena, with a subtle honey undertone emerging on the driving, mineral drenched finish."
